SHMA Consulting had the honor of hosting two prominent figures in the global actuarial profession—Paul Sweeting, President-Elect of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (IFOA), and Ronald T. Kozlowski, CAS Asia Ambassador. Their visits, just days apart, provided our team with invaluable insights into the actuarial field, with each leader offering unique perspectives on the profession’s future and the challenges that lie ahead.
On September 23rd, SHMA Consulting welcomed Paul Sweeting for an enriching day of discussions. As President-Elect of IFOA, Paul brought a wealth of knowledge and global experience to the table. His visit began with engaging conversations with SHMA’s management team and actuarial employees, where he shared his personal journey in the profession and his experiences working across various markets, including Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
Paul’s insights into the IFOA career path were particularly valuable, as he emphasized the importance of continuous professional development. He provided practical guidance on navigating the often-challenging actuarial exams and shared strategies for success that resonated with many in the room. His approachable demeanor and willingness to share both personal and professional experiences fostered an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual respect.
In addition to his focus on exams and career progression, Paul highlighted the evolving role of actuaries in a rapidly changing insurance landscape. He shared examples from his experience in both local and international markets, showcasing how the profession is adapting to meet new challenges. His visit ended on a high note with a delightful hi-tea, allowing the SHMA team to connect with him in a more informal setting and further strengthen our relationship with **IFOA**.
Just a few days later, on September 26th, SHMA had the pleasure of hosting Ronald T. Kozlowski, CAS Asia Ambassador, who brought a different yet equally engaging perspective. Ronald’s session focused on General Insurance (GI) and the critical role that actuaries play in managing risk in this sector. Representing the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS), Ronald detailed how the CAS’s educational programs are designed to equip actuaries with the tools they need to succeed, particularly in the field of property and casualty insurance.
His discussion extended beyond the traditional role of actuaries, touching on the emerging risks faced by the GI industry, such as the rise of cyber insurance. Ronald stressed the importance of lifelong learning, highlighting the resources and certifications offered by CAS to help actuaries stay at the forefront of these developments. His approachable style and practical advice made the session not only informative but also highly engaging for the audience.
One of the standout moments was Ronald’s lighthearted yet thought-provoking remarks on the potential future of flying cars and their impact on the insurance landscape. This blend of humor and forward-thinking insights made the session both memorable and inspiring for our team.
Both visits were an incredible opportunity for SHMA Consulting to gain insights from two of the top leaders in the global actuarial profession. Paul Sweeting’s deep dive into the IFOA career path and professional development, followed by Ronald Kozlowski’s forward-looking perspective on GI and emerging risks, left the SHMA team inspired and motivated to continue growing in their careers.
We are deeply grateful to both Paul and Ronald for their time, knowledge, and willingness to share their experiences. Their visits have strengthened SHMA Consulting’s ties with both IFOA and CAS, and we look forward to future collaborations that will continue to enrich and advance the actuarial profession in Pakistan.
